i tend to assume any battery gauge (camera, computer, etc) is pretty 
nonlinear.

my heuristic is

 >75% = "reliable power"
25-50% = "recharge" and
<25% = "on fumes"

and the extra battery (@>75%) recommendation is the best advice.
