I agree with you that over 400, the image (on a DLUX4) isn't pretty.

Unfortunately, the sample 1600 ISO images shown as part of the LX5 
review look pretty unpleasant to me, noisy, artifacty and overprocessed 
all at the same time.  If there's an improvement over LX3/DLUX4, it's 
not jumping out at me.
