Did try scanning through sleeves. Found it to be far less than advantageous for my taste. I wanted to "see" as much information as possible (rather than just a rough idea). In the end I treated the scanner much as a contact printer. In the case of 35mm I arranged the negs and covered them with a sheet of glass. 120, 4x5 and 8x10 negs didn't require that "flattening" step. Many scanners came with frames for this purpose (I have a few frames from other scanners which didn't work out for one reason or another). I use an old Epson 1600; but any scanner with a transparency module will work.
