Richard I think that it is a mistake to assume that fringing you have seen
in some circumstances is necessarily a limitation of the optical properties
of the lens. There are other factors that can cause or exacerbate 'fringing'
in digital images also. I could detect this effect in only 2 from fifty or
so exposures I made with one and that was in fine detail, adverse light and
on the at extreme edges wide open (with M8). Here's an uncropped sample
reproduced a little larger than normal for you, since pictures are better
than opinions ;-)

For what it's worth, I'm with Marty and consider my 24 to be a more useful
and pleasing lens on my M9. I went for slower and more compact though. It
all depends on what you want to shoot with it naturally.
