That means you in the wrong mode. Try A or M.

Also: within the menu system as like page 5 final option in one of the menus
it has a yes/no choice for something like: Allow camera to shoot with no
lens?" Something like that. As if you 'd really walk around taking shots w
no lens on the camera. But what it means is, can I (camera) assume when I
detect no lens that there is one anyway? Change answer to "yes".

If this is in default "No" setting then you'll get the "Please check blah
blah" no matter what Mode you've selected. Once you got it at "yes" it will
let you shoot M S A and I think P,a nd will even light meter and act as an
aperture-priority or shutter priority control.
