Currently, the smallest drive I have on my workstation is 1TB. If you consider the space and hardware required to run older and smaller drives, it's cheaper and simpler to get the biggest or the second biggest drive available, and copy stuff over. I keep the old drives around just in case I lose data on the new drives, but I have never had to do that, since I now keep the operating systems and applications on a RAID mirror. Everything gets back up to external drives hourly...
