I completely agree about using these arms length horrors. OTOH it is easy to 
see why they don't fit a viewfinder - cost. The screens on the back are 
there anyway the provision of any sort on viewfinder adds at 100% to the 
camera cost...
People moving from their phone to a P&S digital have perhaps never seen a 
viewfinder, let alone used one. I saw a tourist in Oxford this summer hand 
his camera to a passer by and ask her to take his picture. She held it up at 
arms length and was annoyed to see nothing in the back screen. He had to 
explain about the viewfinder.
We oldies are not an important part of their market. At all.
