Alan,

it seems to depend on the input data.

Some of the shots - where the balance between black and white is almost 
1:1 - are printed perfectly - like Jayanands tiger (page 40).

My BW shot with a predominance of white and grey (page 39) appears quite 
a bit darker than I expected (about 1.5 stops).

A very few BW shots unfortunately look as if something went wrong in the 
printing process. (Marty Deveney's African shots (pp 122-123) and 
Nicolas Vigier's landscapes pp 194-195)

Maybe some kind of automatic gain correction (Auto-level) is being applied.

Was this the problem you had?

Perhaps this varies depending on the facility where it was printed - it 
would be interesting to find out - my copy was printed in Holland.


The blacks in my copy are really rich, saturated and very black.

Colour reproduction is very good throughout the book.
