Thanks for looking and commenting everyone.
Jayanand, it is a difficult place in more than one way. We had to ride
across the desert near Chilas and that was brutally hot. The scenery is
spectacular. More spectacular than any other alpine areas I have visited in
North America, Asia or Europe.
Hugh,
If you get the chance, it's worth the detour. There use to be an unreliable
flight into Gilgit (which basically only flies when the weather is good
enough to land on VFR rules). The hostility which is almost palpable even
back in 1998 was mostly south of Gilgit. Very unfortunate.
