That's a tough one. Sunrise is at 6:50. If I were you I'd drive down Big Sur
and walk up to Nepenthe Restaurant. The view south from up there is
fabulous. And you stand a chance to be above the clouds.

If you leave Palo Alto at 5:00 you should get first light. But honestly the
light a little later when it starts to go above the mist (IF there is any;
no guarantees) is best. I'd leave around 6.

It's supposed to rain you know...
Good luck. I've been chasing thos shots for years!
Best,
Bob

Very nice. What's the length of the exposure?

I am thinking about getting up at O-godawful-hours on Thurs morning
and hit the Carmel area by Sunrise and spend whole day driving/walking
up and down Rt.1 to take pictures. Any good recommendation? I am
looking for misty mountains and such...

This is not the famous one in Monterey that requires you to leave your first
born as a deposit for green fees. This is a very small beach on the coast of
San Mateo County, just south of Half Moon Bay (and south of Pescadero for
those familiar with the area). I happened to hit it at about 2 hours into a
rising tide, so the waves were coming in.
The thing about this beach is there is no sand. There are only these small,
beautifully colored pebbles and beautiful outcrops of rocks. No one knows
why these pebbles appear, and sometimes disappear. I was knocked out with
the place and must go back often.
