If this is true, the other implication is the possibility that the buffer
would need to be twice as big to get the same performance.....or,
conversely, the buffer would be half the shot size as it is now..... and
that is not too big anyway.....

Tradeoffs, that WE should be allowed to make through menu selection... I
agree....

How is this done in the M9? Selection of 8 or 14 bit output? Menu? What
is the actual difference on the buffer? Anything?

If I remember correctly, the M8 captures?14bit from the sensor but writes 8
bit to the card. As Geoff implied, this may be a?"wait for write" time
issue, which I, for one, would like the option (via menu?) to have.

Bob has a good set of ideas.... especially since these are probably all
SW/FW issues, and could be addressed easily, but charged for....

Lens selection... even if Stefan said it was impossible, or whatever.... I
still want it.
Auto exposure bracketing... Pretty trivial but requires FW changes......
Easier Exposure compensation setting.... Ditto FW.....
14 bit files? Not so sure, but it should be pretty possible... it may even
have been built in, then taken out/truncated? for some marketing reason.....

FW is expensive to write, and maybe Leica does or does not have the
expertise to do it.... but if they could charge a few hundred bucks for
these kinds of overall improvements, I think it could pay for itself.....
The algorithms are already written ( M9), all they need to do is recompile
the code with the M8 in mind.

And it would be easy to do.. pay a fee, download the code, install....? all
at home.....

Lens selection
No IR filter required
Auto exposure bracketing
Easier Exposure compensation setting
New M9 Shutter release?features (I forget exactly what it is, but something
to do with a half press...)
14 bit files
