Mark a DNG is simply one form of Raw file. It has particular advantages.
You can also convert other Raw formats to the DNG format which has other
advantages.
The M8 of course produces DNG files which is why the responses referred to
DNG rather than Raw in general. However the workflow is valid for other
formats.
In the case of your Nikon NEF Raw files you may choose to convert them to
DNG if you wish. Adobe provide a free tool to do that. You can also include
the original NEF file within the new version if desired.
The Adobe software needs to make an intelligent estimate of the white
balance information from your NEF, since Nikon chooses to encrypt that
information.
Nikon's Raw convertor software cannot read DNG files, only its own
proprietary format. Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw support hundreds of Raw
formats, including DNGs.
Raw is processed to produce a viewable file but you are essentially not
losing any of the original information, except that different forms of
compression may be applied within the camera. However the
optional compression of DNG files by Adobe's software (after importing from
your camera) is lossless.
For you, I recommend a very fine book explaining Raw processing. Real world
Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS4 by Bruce Fraser and Jeff Schewe. It is
made of paper and can fit in the back of any of your camera bags.
