Hi Clive, yes I understand. The jury is out regarding M8 algorithm
improvements for noise at higher ISO's. Each time a new version of the
firmware is released this is up for discussion. I am not aware that Leica
themselves have made any claims regarding noise reduction along the
way.  The combination of a Raw converter and Photoshop (or specialised
plug-ins for PS) is much more powerful and flexible in every aspect than
anything the camera may achieve in firmware conversion to jpeg.  That is NOT
a condemnation of shooting jpgs, but their advantages lie elsewhere (file
size, convenience, speed). I think fair to say those are given less
weighting by M8 users than perhaps by mainstream dSLR shooters. To that end
Canon and Nikon have much more sophisticated processing going on, whereas
Leica aims to preserve the best possible original optical information. You
can see overlap of course, for example the vignette and cyan corner
compensations that have emerged to address complications from the UV/IR
fix.
