Doug,

Jack Young met the five of us - all kids from suburban homes in the New
York City suburbs - at the Greyhound 'station' (the town general
store/pharmacy/cafe/soda fountain/gas station) in Ashton, Idaho, drove us in
his truck the 18 miles, mostly dirt road, to the ranch where he told us to
take our bags to the bunkhouse and c'mon out to the corral where to each of
us in turn he said: Seth, this here little colt's name is Apache; he's
two-year-old and he's 'mostly' broke; he's your horse for the summer. He's a
good little horse so you take good care of him and he'll treat you good'.
Jack Young was right and Apache did. Maybe he had been born on the trail (we
were in the middle of the Targhee National Forest about 4 miles from the SW
corner of Yellowstone Nat'l Park) but he was 'mostly' broke. He was more
than a little cantakerous but although I had ridden horses in summer camp
since I'd been 6 or 7, that first summer at the J Bar Y was the summer that
I learned how to ride. And survive.

S.
