it's when they become modal. Having to change the iso manually is modal, and
easily forgotten. It was unavoidable until dx coding was introduced, at
which point every new model of film camera adopted it. Setting iso is a good
example because it is pretty much exactly parallel to the idea of dialling
in which lens you're using versus having the lens itself coded.
