Thanks.... that is what I thought.....
So somewhere, I have some form of contaminated/broken driver.... 

I think I will have no choice but to reinstall WIN XP and start over......
It has been a year since my last OS re-do, so maybe I am overdue
anyway......

I know for sure that XP can handle multiple scanners, including a Nikon and
an Epson flatbed since that's what I have....
