"Whereas GIMP was slow to a crawl on the
same machine."

GIMPshop is slow on Windows machines because it is hampered by the OS
itself. A good working modest laptop running with ppc or Pentium m,
Intel core or greater architecture running Linux will scream in
comparison to the Windows OS on the same machine. My laptop handles a
full color 1.3GB scan of a 6x9 frame at 4800dpi just fine. No hangup
at all. The same machine running Windows can't even open the file.
