You want to capture the background light as well. I'm usually at 1/8th sec 
to 30th sec.

One cool thing I like about the M8 is now it has rear curtain synch. SLRs 
have had that for years. I know many frown upon the use of flash with a 
Leica, but hell sometimes even a Nocti is not enough!
