You get better fine detail without it. That's the reason they decided to leave it off. I don't think I'm an apologist. If I were somebody who photographed a lot of black polyester material, having to use the IR filters would be a minor nuisance, but since I don't miss the IR filters in 90% of what I shoot, I'll go for finer detail any day.
