Harwood's invention dates to 1926 (or so). Rolex claims 1931 for their
automatic. Pellaton's invention of the pawl-winding system dates to the late
1940's with significant production coming with the Ingenieur model (calibre
85XX) in 1955.

If I want really accurate time I check my atomic clock, which I also use to
set my automatic and mechanical watches. The Seiko Spring Drive system in
their Grand Seiko's are also really interesting.
