Thanks to everyone for looking and identifying. The most prevalent and  
authoritative answer is HOOPOE (no idea how to pronounce it, the  
Danish name from Mads is much easier). The other reasonable answer was  
a woodpecker on LSD.

The wealth of knowledge here is astounding.
