Subject: [Leica] Lightroom 2 question - can one merge?

Should not be: when I save metadata to file it makes those XMP sidecars, but
all the files are DNG anyway: most of the metadata came across, only flags
and colour labels.

The metadata is stored with the RAW only if it is a DNG. Any other
RAW has to have the metadata saved as an XMP sidecar which also has
to be transferred. Could this be the problem?
