I scan as 48 bit HDR Color which gives you what Lasersoft calls a RAW
tiff. It makes no corrections at all and gives you all of the
information present in the negative. Here is how they explain
it: "In order to save RAW data with extended dynamic range (HDR -
High Dynamic Range), the 48bit TIFF format and the CAMERA RAW format
was developed. Even scanners or cameras with only 30 or 36 bit
capability generate their maximum output range in this format.
Regardless of the effective dynamic range supplied, the file will
always become a 48 bit file. Normal scanning software saves images
into a 24 bit file, discarding the extra information created by the
scanner. 48 bit files retain all of the information supplied."

I can't use Digital ICE with B&W film and I tried the SRD available
in Lasersoft and find that it either removes nothing or, cranked way
up, makes the image too soft. The manual says you can use SRD in up
to four levels but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. If I'm
going to scan all of this stuff, I want to do the best job possible one time.
