Most of the software on the iMac was transferred from my Powerbook G4 using Apple's Migration Assistant. Anyway, I had the not-so-bright idea of just selecting the hard disk and giving myself write access to everything on it. The result is that the thing will not start now (I have run the hardware diagnostics which show nothing untoward). I suppose I have a weekend of Apple support to look forward to :-( Fortunately, all my pictures and my Lightroom database are 100% backed up to an external HD. Still, the fact that I am making such a big deal out of this shows how spoiled I have become since I switched to Mac in 2006. This is the first time that anything has gone wrong for me with OSX.
