My only (digital) printing experience has been with RIPs (IP and QTR), and some custom profiles. I do note that with my R1800 (my most recent vintage printer), I get very good color prints on Epson Premium Luster with the factory profile for soft-proofing. So maybe things have changed. I usually run into troubles with b&w without a RIP, but then the 3800 has ABW, which I have not tried.
