Yes, the functions are the EXIF insertion, some flash zoom control and some
vignette control, primarily significant with wides. This can be managed post
as well, of course. However the integration of this in-camera processing
with the UV/IR filter functions and the newest firmware does strengthen the
case to have both coding and filters with wides. Not to say that it is
essential but it has some benefit in some situations.

In the full frame M9 the vignetting will be transparently neutralized,
although Adobe will do it better in software. The lens coding will be
entered by a simple menu option, making the coding redundant. The new f.95
Fuzzilogilux will have no aperture ring whatsoever although users may elect
to purchase a phase shifting virtual aperture control which can also be set
for any DoF or aperture combination you desire using quantam physics and a
dilithium crystal power source to revisit the instant before the photo was
taken. OK I made this last paragraph up ;-)

Cheers

I read somewhere - I can't find it now - that the coding would
optimize the performance of the lens - addressing known vignetting
and color balance issue, particularly with wide angle lenses.
