We hope that Steve won't be fighting off too many crazed muggers in the hospital confines; or maybe bad attitude coyotes in the desert? ;-) An acquaintance of mine once did use a camera for self defence, actually breaking a camera body off the end of a telephoto over the assailant's head! This was back when SLR's were rather more substantially constructed. On carrying cameras with monopods, I found that you could brace the retracted assembly against your body for a very steady support, too. Cheers Geoff -----Original Message----- Subject: RE: [Leica] OT best light monopod ? Everybody is talking about light and easy to carry! I haven't seen anyone mention how effective a monopod is when you leave an event at night carrying all the gear out to the darkened parking lot looking for your car! Trust me you want "STURDY" like a club! That's the most important! For use with a camera? Hell that's secondary! You load everything on one shoulder, put the monopod in your best hand/arm for whacking! Then go forth without fear of being mugged! Don't laugh it's very effective as it either keeps the bad guys away seeing you carrying it. OR it's very effective with one swipe to the head, arm or anywhere you can get a good lick in by giving the bad guy a damn good smack!! But you want the hardest damn smack you can inflict at first shot! You don't want him to get up before your in car and gone or help arrives! Every accredited photographer to the '92 Summer Olympics received a very sturdy heavy weight monopod courtesy of Canon. I still have mine and have only used it once in the above mentioned fashion! Trust me it still works as a camera conveyance and is still in good shape for the next bad guy! :-) Think protection first, light monopod second! There maybe a day you'll be very glad you did it my way! ted _______________________________________________ Leica Users Group. See http://leica-users.org/mailman/listinfo/lug for more information
