I have no idea about R adapters but I can easily focus 105/1.8 and 180/2.8 
AIS manual lenses on the D300. Looks to me the D300 VF is 
slightly brighter than the D200 but not by much. Still not as large or 
bright as the D2h,D2x models. Have not seen a D3 yet.

Kyle mentioned he uses a 100mm manual macro without problems.
