The entrance to the bay went undiscovered for a long time. Except for 
the Wiott Indian and a couple other tribes, Humboldt Bay wasn't settled 
until the 1850's because mariners stayed so far away from the rugged 
coast here. Early crossings across the bar wrecked a lot of ships. Even 
with the newer jetties, it's still a sailor's nail-biter at times. And 
every year we lose one or two tourists from rogue waves sweeping them 
into the surf. We locals don't turn our backs on the ocean here. You
