I have a 280 f2.8 it has lower contrast than a Canon 300mm f2.8. I  
sent it for a CLA because of this and it was returned (from Solms)  
with the contact strip and chip, smoother focusing but still lower  
contrast than a Canon. I was surprised, given the reputation. Leica  
said the lens was "to specification"
The 280 f4 which Doug uses to such great effect is said to be the  
best tele lens ever.
