I think the clipped wings improved roll rate. It definitely seemed to mess up the elegant wing shape. Probably Marc or someone will tell us the story! I recall a phrase quoted from the period, "clipped, cropped and clapped out" or something like that, referring to the modified airframes. Cheers Hoppy -----Original Message----- Subject: Re: [Leica] For airplane fans- Spitfires, Hurricane and Mustang Peter: Love them Spitfires? I may a a Yank, but as a boy back around 1950's , my Croydon-born grandmother (lovely, witty, classy lady) gave me "The British Book of Airplanes". Wish I still had the book; it was a classic for boys (of all ages). I memorized every photo, every description. I was hypnotized by the Gloster Meteor, Supermarine, Blenheim, Lancaster, Avro-Tudor - shall I go on? To this day, I can still mark the sound of a Rolls-Royce Merlin at speed. A nautical sports sidebar; in the heyday of Unlimited Hydroplane Racing (when they still used reciprocating engines), supercharged Merlin and the American Allison G2 WW II were engines of choice and generally powered the winning boats. You could hear the time trials and the races from miles away! Loved your photos. Can you tell us more about the genesis of the Clipped Wing? I will put up what I got later, although they are mostly ground-based as I personally find anything less than a 135 virtually unusable for taking shots like this. OK...there are some exceptions and the Mustang anmd the Spit on Saturday night were one such.
