It is great to see the restoration of the B-58 on display indoors now. Quite an amazing lady. In an aviation book from the period, I recall a claim that the huge centreline store only added about 2% to the drag in operations and that the inner, smaller store was a freefall special weapon, nestled neatly within the outer and larger jettisonable fuel tank. Cheers Hoppy -----Original Message----- Subject: [Leica] IMG: B-58A Hustler The attached pictures are of the Convair B-58A Hustler at the National Museum of the US Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. In 1962, this particular aircraft won the last Bendix Trophy Race ever held, flying from Los Angeles to New York in 2 hours, 58.7 seconds. The B-58 was in service less than 10 years, from 1960 to 1969: When I first photographed it in May, 1977, is was in rather forlorn condition: _http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/Ira+Silverman/Aircraft/B-58A+Hustler+-+May+1 977+_1_.jpg.html_ (http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/Ira+Silverman/Aircraft/B-58A+Hustler+-+May+1977+_1_.jpg.html) _http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/Ira+Silverman/Aircraft/B-58A+Hustler+-+May+1 977+_2_.jpg.html_ (http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/Ira+Silverman/Aircraft/B-58A+Hustler+-+May+1977+_2_.jpg.html) It's hard to believe that the Douglas B-66 Destroyer next to it was a contemporary, entering service in 1956 and being retired in 1973, with a few of the Navy versions (A3D) lingering on as test mules into the 1980's. By July 2000, the Bendix Hustler had been restored and moved indoors: _http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/Ira+Silverman/Aircraft/B-58A+Hustler+-+July+ 2000.jpg.html_ (http://gallery.leica-users.org/v/Ira+Silverman/Aircraft/B-58A+Hustler+-+July+2000.jpg.html) Details: Leica M4, 35mm 'cron Kodachrome 64 (1977). Elite 200 and Flash (2000).
