The clerk in the store gets no useful information--the store copy of the receipt does not even show the full credit card number. This is especially prevalent in Scandinavia now but is spreading elsewhere. It is now basically impossible to use a Visa or MC in Denmark without having a PIN code--so if you are planning to visit there, be sure to ask your bank for one. But let's be real: even with the old system the store clerk does NOT have all the information to perpetuate a fraud. I do a lot of online transactions, and every site where I buy anything requires the billing address of the credit card, and many will not ship elsewhere. Also, increasingly shopping sites require you to type in your card security code, which is not printed with raised letters on the card and hence is not printed on the shop receipts. So unless you tell the crooked store clerk your billing address, I really do not see many opportunities for fraud.
