I suspect that this is not true. It is so easy to build a DVD drive that can 
also read CDs that I'm sure all of them will be able to do so for a long 
long 
time.

For some reason I didn't see Dennis' original question:

but it is the nature of that industry to make drives that are backwards 
compatible, because it will help them build market share. That means that it 
is certain that Blu-Ray and HD-DVD readers will be able to read regular DVDs 
and also CDs. Note that there are at least 3 kinds of "regular DVDs", namely 
DVD, DVD-R, and DVD+R, never mind the rewritable ones.
