Jim,
I think that's always a possibility given the conditions of other M8 newbie 
folks.

Why knock yourself out trying to figure out what the problem is, 
particularly after you've given the instruction manual a very solid work out 
to make sure the camera is working correctly. And you are reading the 
instructions correctly.

After all, you bought it in good faith to work properly upon purchase, if it 
isn't? Then one would assume the machine be replaced, or remedied, certainly 
when you are finding something major wrong as you have.
