If the sensor is in the camera, eventually there are no more sensors left to 
replace older ones... In the cases noted....they use
Silicon cells ( except the Contarex.).  Because of space limitations, it is 
usually pretty impossible to substitute a newer cell for
an older one.

Yes, electronic consumer electronics has a finite life.  Maybe years, maybe 
decades, maybe months......  You never can tell.
