I would love to be able to give you an good answer, but I don't think  
there is one. Charging batteries may be a problem, but there are  
backpacks with solar cells that can keep your batteries topped up  
should you go digital. Weather is an issue especially with digital  
cameras as well.

Romantic: take b/w film only, travel with a mechanical Leica and one  
back up perhaps 2 lenes. You will probably take better images with  
less equipment and choices.

Practical: take digital only. Have a small camera like the Ricoh  
which is weather proof, a smallish DSLR with good battery life and 2  
zooms, 2 iPods or other small storage devices. Go crazy

My likely choice: take too much, try too hard, carry a DSLR, spare  
back and 5 lenses, carry a 17" laptop with solar recharger, have a b/ 
w film camera in medium format. Carry a tripod filters and different  
films and then grossly underuse them ;-)
