You must something running in the background that somehow collides with it. One solution for stability that I use is to have my desktop computer disconnected from the outside world. I use it for most of my Photoshop work (now that I have my Powerbook, I use that too, when I am on the road). My surfing is done on a laptop which I keep downstairs. When I post images, I just copy the JPEGs to a USB stick, walk downstairs to my laptop and upload from there. I stumbled upon this by accident (a couple of years I screwed up the network settings in my desktop so badly that I was never able to connect it after that), but it works extremely well. Now I have at least one computer in the house that I know will never have viruses, spyware, adware, and whatnot. Does wonders for stability.
