You may not be driving Dutch cars or using Dutch cameras, but actually
this country has a suprisingly large number of global companies
considering its size. Its car industry (DAF) and its commercial aircraft
industry (Fokker) are long gone, but everyone will be familiar with
companies like Philips, Shell and Heineken, all of whom are among the
top 5 in the world in their respective fields. Less known but equally
important are companies like Unilever (if you live anywhere outside
Antarctica, you probably have one of their products in your kitchen or
bathroom), Randstad (one of the world's largest temp agencies), the big
banks ING and ABN Amro and others.

In addition to the indigenous Dutch companies, this is also one of the
most popular locations (along with Belgium and the UK) for American or
Asian companies to locate their EMEA headquarters. In the small town
where my children go to school the main private employer is Nike, for
example.

Then you have Rotterdam, one of the world's busiest ports, and Schiphol,
one of the world's busiest (and best, according to business traveller
surveys) international airports.

But all that goes out the window on a sunny Saturday in Amsterdam. There
is an old saying that Rotterdam is a city for making money and Amsterdam
one for spending it. This is less true today with an economy dominated
by service industries, but there is certainly still a grain of truth in it.
