The Ultrachrome inks (read pigment) will not require a constant "on" position. I've used pigment inks in my 1270 for quite some time and have run into what you are suggesting but the older printers were not designed for the new inks. I run something through mine at least once a week and have no problems. You should be able to do the same with your 2400. Also, a couple of cleaning cycles will not use that much ink.
