Jim,
Yes, the benchmarks are pretty much in a grid throughout the U.S. and almost
all land surveys will ultimately refer to them as they are by definition
exactly where they say they are.  An interesting aside, my dad during a
brief stint as a teacher of surveying had as part of the final a benchmark
that was in the middle of a creek.  If you could do the math then you would
find it.
