It depends. In serious competition reefs are put in and shaken out
as needed. The only thing that matters is boat speed. In casual
racing with family and friends as crew, particularly if it's blowing
a bit and cold to boot, compromises are made, particularly if the
first weather leg is short. Setting in a reef downwind to get ready
for a long slog to weather and the finish is another matter.

All you non-sailors now thoroughly confused? Or bored? ;-)))

To get back on topic, we sometimes take pictures during races but
it's frowned upon by all but the most lenient skippers.
