Some friends have a very small cottage near St Benoit du Sault in between Chateauroux and Limoges and I've spent quite a bit of time there over the years. I was working just outside Paris in St Cloud, so the metropolitan influence was probably far stronger than in the countryside. However even the smallest Monoprix had a cheese selection that was, in UK terms, superb - not just wall to wall cheddar. Fond memories. Hi Steve, I think the eating thing depends on where you are living and how "modern" things have become. During the 4 years I lived in France (not continuously) I was right in the middle - Le Cher vraiment la France profonde - we ate out every lunchtime. The factory was closed for 2 hours (this went down to 1 1/2 during my 4 years) even the switchboard was set to autoreply and everything. Married people went home and had lunch with the family, few children ate at school. The rest of us went to local restaurants which catered for exactly this sort of thing. It was excellent and I now continue to have a proper lunch even though I am back in England, let the rest have a sandwich at their desk if they like! Not many people ate out in the evening during the week. I was about 50km from Sancerre so went there for Sunday lunch when not working or home in the UK, chance to stock up on wine too. As I was away from home on my own I was keen to buy simple freezer food to have in stock when necessary. The freezer section in the local supermarket was pitiful, small poor choice of rubbish in tatty containers. Fresh live lobster, no problem, local cheese from unpasturised milk, no problem and so on. Fast food - not available. When I said to my colleagues the fast food was poor at the supermarket they said well fast food IS poor.......... McDonalds opened an outlet next to the supermarket. It was popular with children and teenagers but I never saw adults eat there.
