When view under the lights of different cultures, they may seem arcane. Even if you strip away all the cultural trappings and look at things in a "balanced view," that's by itself a cultural bias too. However, you can't force a bias to another culture. Calling them backward or any other names will not contribute to healthy debate. The thing to do is to open your arms and say, this is what we do, which is different from what you do. May be when there is a Starbuck in every corner on the earth everyone will also adopt our customs. There are times when things cross certain lines and perhaps people need to take action, but I don't think marriage customs cross that yet.
