Thanks Doug,
I think this is also one of the situations where the Canon is letting me
down a little too, albeit at ISO 800, I'm getting very strong coloured
fringes along the bottom edge of the twig, and around the leaves, I
wonder how 800 film would have reacted to the very strong backlight.
I think I may try it again with spot metering on one of the birds.
What did very pleasantly surprise me was the resolution of the tail
feathers of the left-hand bird when I looked at the full resolution
image, the (around) $200 I forked out for the Novoflex seems to be well
invested, its performance wide open is quite astounding, the accuracy of
the pistol-grip focussing is really spot-on - and it let me use 1/1600th
too.
cheers
Douglas

BTW I'm trying out my recently acquired chrome SL and an absolutely
gorgeous 135/2,8 Elmarit-R this week,I already know the performance from
the M version so I'm looking forward to getting some pin-sharp slides
from this one too.
