That's why Adobe has come up with DNG as a raw format.  There are groups 
like Open Raw who are lobbying for the raw format to be open.  Software 
geeks can crack all of the raw formats available now, but I'm not worried 
about that.  I just want my "negatives" so I can develop them any way I 
want to in the future.  Anybody who wants to understand and know more about 
raw should read "Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop" by Bruce 
Fraser.  You will learn how important raw is and what you can do with it.
