I think you can save layered files in TIFF format can't you? I just
tried in CS2 and it seems to work. TIFF is probably the most stable
way to save your files if you're worried about being able to open
files in the future.

I don't remember - has Adobe created image files in earlier versions
of Photoshop that CS2 or 1 can't open?

I think it's not like the early days when file formats changed with
every point-release. (I'm thinking of Page Maker here in particular).
