But you may want periodically to spin it up - long
offline hard disks may have shorter life (like all
mechanical parts.)
I recommend Hitachi/ibm sata drives and concur with
Brian for not getting the cutting edge capacity
models. You can buy 2- or 4-port PCI sata controller
card pretty cheap for expansion. Hitachi drives (and
the new seagate large capacity sata drives) consume
about half power comparing with others and less heat
usually means less cooling and may help reliability.
Currently, the unit cost of 250GB drives is at
sweetspot among all capacity.
