I can certainly provide some anecdotal evidence to support the latter
part, at least...  I was space-greedy (I've been accumulating
uncompressed rips of my CDs) and popped a 400G Hitachi SATA into my
machine.  After all, I'd had excellent results with the IBM 120GXP and
180GXP series.

One of the Hitachi 400s was DOA and the second was dead within the first 
week.

All hail Retrospect, is all I can say.

Not managing to generalize from this lesson, I replaced the Hitachi 400G
drive with another 400, this time a Seagate.  That's been humming along
(touch wood) just swell for lo this past month or so.
