The 35 asph 1.4 is indeed flare-proof, or as close to it as one can come. But it is not damage proof. And a lens shade will almost always take a whack better than a front element or edge of the lens. Enough of this idiocy about the "compactness" etc. - the 35 1.4 asph is, like virtually every other Leica M lens new or old, virtually minute in comparison to any SLR versions of similar lenses. What does anyone think not using a shade and making the lens "more compact" will do to improve their photography? BTW, Congrats on your replacement lens. Mine was a Christmas present to myself and it is outstanding. I can see why Irwin flipped over it. If it's any consolation, only five 50 ASPH's have come into North America since the Christmas holidays in Germany. A friend of mine just got one of the other four. These things must be hard to make! <http://www.leica-camera.com/discus_e/messages/11/111853.html?1108087277 > Best Regards, William At 06:23 PM 02/10/2005 -0700, you wrote: >For many years I have not use the shade on my 35/1.4A.
